Travellers consider sustainability in travel decisions

Since the COVID-19 pandemic ended, a significant shift towards sustainable air travel has become evident among consumers. A recent survey reveals that over half of travellers now consider the environmental impact of their journeys more than ever before.

The growing awareness of the sustainability issue among travellers is one of the trends that CAPA has pointed out in an analysis, published at the start of its World Aviation Summit. CAPA - Centre for Aviation, is the world's leading resource for global aviation news, analysis, and research.

Sustainability awareness

While the global appetite for air travel has rebounded, the pandemic has left a lasting impact on sustainability awareness, the report states. Today's passengers are willing to make sacrifices in cost, time, and convenience to prioritize environmental considerations. Travel options perceived as green can now command premium prices.

Airlines are responding to this shift by emphasizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Purchasing commitments for SAF surged twentyfold in 2021 and doubled again in 2022. These alternative fuels are projected to play a pivotal role in reducing commercial aviation emissions by up to two-thirds by 2050.

Seeking information

In conclusion, the report says that as consumers and businesses are increasingly seeking information on carbon footprints, emissions offsetting, and sustainable travel options, the aviation industry is adapting to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly air travel.
