Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an alternative to fossil kerosene made from non-fossil resources such as used cooking oil. Over the past three years, the SAF bought by Air France and KLM reduced CO₂ emissions by an average of 90%, from production to use, compared to conventional jet fuel.
SAF is a key lever in Air France and KLM their decarbonization pathway, alongside fleet renewal, operational efficiency, and plane-train intermodality options. However, global SAF production remains limited, and the costs are 3 to 4 times higher than those of kerosene, making corporate demand an important driver of production growth.
What Air France and KLM are doing
Beyond increasing volumes, Air France and KLM source SAF responsibly under strict European sustainability standards. The purchased SAF does not compete with food production, cause deforestation, or contain palm oil; requirements that are applied worldwide.
In 2025, Air France and KLM continued to scale up their use of SAF. In 2025, the two airlines:
- Used 244,000 tons of SAF, (more than double the volume used in 2024)
- Reached a 2.9% SAF share of total fuel use, going beyond the EU regulatory blending mandate
- Ranked among the top three largest SAF purchasers globally in recent years
